Derek Drake, originally from London, has woven a rich tapestry of experiences from his extensive travels and work across Africa into his art, exploring the elemental aspects of shape, space, light, color, and texture, all underpinned by a deep spiritual resonance. Educated at prestigious institutions like the Hornsey School of Arts & Crafts, the Central School of Art, and the London School of Printing and Graphic Design, Drake's career commenced at Smee's Advertising in London. His artistic journey took a significant turn when he ventured into Africa, contributing his creative prowess to leading advertising agencies in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Nairobi.

Electing Cape Town as his base, Derek endeavored to establish his own agency. However, the demands of business management detracted from his artistic pursuits, leading him to a life of travel across the African continent. His journeys through Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Belgian Congo were more than mere travels; they were a profound immersion into the continent's vibrant landscapes, rich traditions, and symbolic depth. This period was instrumental in shaping his artistic vision, imbuing his work with the intricate meanings and symbolic richness of African cultures.
