Curatorial Residency

We invite curators to research the Collection, offering an opportunity to curate exhibitions that highlight contemporary African art. Residents are supported from concept development to the final staging of their exhibitions, culminating in a meaningful contribution to art discourse.

Program Overview

The resident guest curator is expected to research the collection with the intention of curating an exhibition and writing the exhibition catalogue at the end of the residency. After an indepth research, a curatorial project is submitted to be approved by the ARAK Collection Advisory Committee.

Grant Details

The fellowship provides up to USD 20,000, which includes USD 5,000 for research expenses and a USD 15,000 budget to produce the exhibition and publish the catalogue.

Duration and Phases

Phase 1
In the first month of the program, the fellow develops a research budget, curatorial concept, accompanied with clear and achievable timelines. This is submitted to the ARAK Collection Curatorial Advisory Committee for approval.
Phase 2 — Research phase
Upon approval, the curator enters the next four months of research. Here, they select an artwork list for their exhibition. They also begin an extensive research of the artists, their works and themes. This includes reading journals, books, essays, articles, as well as interviews with the artists. During a research trip to the collection. They examine the works of the artists to develop a more accurate interpretation of their art; the nuances, texture, and composition.
Phase 3 — Final Phase
They review their work, seek feedback, revise their curatorial statements, catalogue texts and prepare for a final submission and presentation of their projects.

Outcome

If approved, the project will enter the production stage, supervised by the ARAK Collection team, which culminates in a curated exhibition accompanied by a catalogue, marking the end of their residency.

Art Writers Residency

Designed for art writers, critics, and journalists, this residency provides the space to produce insightful essays, articles, and publications. Through direct engagement with the ARAK Collection, participants will develop a publication project.

Program Overview

This residency is aimed at promoting critical dialogue around contemporary African art practices, with a focus on African artists in the collection. Art writers are encouraged to engage with the collection and the art community, producing works that resonate with both academic audiences and the general public.

Grant Details

The fellowship offers an approximate total of USD 20,000, divided into USD 5,000 for research and USD 15,000 towards the writing and publication process.

Duration and Phases

Stage 1 — Research
After selection, art writers receive a research grant to support their study of the ARAK Collection. This phase allows for immersive engagement with artworks, artists, and curators, for in-depth narratives.
Stage 2 — Writing & Publishing
Following research, writers focus on drafting their articles, essays, or books. The aim is to publish these writings as part of upcoming publications by ARAK Collection, or as dedicated catalogues or books. The ARAK Collection team assists in the editing, design, and printing processes to ensure the highest quality of publication.

Outcome

If your project receives the ARAK Curatorial Advisory Committee consensual approval, it will be selected for development and ultimately published.
